- 2025 - RHIZOME - NEW YORK, NY -
- 2025 - WATER STREET ASSOCIATION - NEW YORK, NY -Electronics, Speakers, Subwoofer, Aluminum, Wood, Amplifier Upholstery, Speaker Wire, Chain, HardwareA sound installation piece and performance platform exploring the combination of high frequency spatial audio and extreme low frequency haptic audio. The piece utilizes a 32-channel hanging speaker array and a 1-channel floor-mounted subwoofer platform controlled via a custom designed electronic audio system. The piece features a built-in long form audio behavior which can be experienced by the public during viewing hours, and is also usable as an instrument-platform for performance activations by collaborating artists.Heaven and Earth Diptych was originally commissioned by Rhizome as part of Rhizome World at WSA - 161 Water Street, and is now open as a public artwork at WSA - 160 Maiden Lane. Heaven and Earth Diptych was also made possible by the&#38;nbsp; NYSCA Support for Artist Grant, which supported the development of the ShiftDriver spatial audio technology underlying the piece.

 The configuration of the system explores the physicality of sound and the way in which different forms of audio are experienced by the listener. High frequency sound is directional: we feel its positioning and movement in space. Low frequency sound is tactile: it can be felt via the sensation of touch as well as hearing. Both of these effects are the result of the physical size of the waveforms involved: high frequency waves are physically small, so minor differences in positioning are felt more greatly, whereas low frequency waves are physically large, creating a greater surface area for the reception of tactile sensation. Heaven and Earth Diptych invites both audiences and performers to creatively explore the physical experience of sound.  
 
Heaven and Earth Diptych exists as part of a long-term body of work using the ShiftDriver Spatial Audio System, a custom electronic audio platform designed to control large numbers of sound sources with sample accuracy using 1-bit sound. Each piece in the series expands scope and form factor, exploring new sonic possibilities for the technology. A key feature of this approach is collaboration, making the instruments accessible to other performers thereby sharing and more fully exploring their sonic and creative potential. This approach centers on a long-term body of work building towards the creation of TEMPLE-65536: the world’s largest spatial audio instrument as a permanent installation open to artists and composers from around the world.

12” Morningstar Speaker Pair, Custom Spike Pattern, Rust Patina
&#38;nbsp;The Morningstar Speaker design was inspired by a technological coincidence bridging hundreds of years of history: the form of a Morningstar (a medieval spiked mace weapon) is an acoustically optimal design for a speaker.Sound expands spherically, and spherical speaker enclosures are renowned by audiophiles for their even frequency response. Within the enclosure, the spherical walls create a maximally complex path of reflection for sound waves, allowing the speaker to harness the acoustical amplification provided by a hollow cavity while maintaining an even tonality. Outside the enclosure, the curved wall prevents early reflections off of the surface of the speaker, creating a more direct experience of the sound. The spikes of the Morningstar function as loudspeaker spike components: hardware specifically designed to isolate vibration from the surface the speaker rests upon. The speaker can stand on any combination of 3 spikes, allowing for flexible directional positioning. Any of the spikes can spikes can also be replaced with an eye bolt, allowing for use as a hanging pendant speaker with flexible directionality. 
The spike in the speaker's center functions as a phase plug, reflecting and dispersing high frequencies to create a more spatially even frequency response ideal for home listening environments.

Leviathan repurposes the structure of Cathedral-64, a 64-channel spatial audio installation that ran from June to October 2023 at Harvestworks on Governors Island. The original installation consisted of 64 speakers mounted across the walls and ceiling of a room, with speaker wire runs to each originating from a central pedestal housing an electronic audio system. Upon deinstallation, a skeleton was left behind: wire runs, many exceeding 30ft in length, were now disengaged from their original form, appearing as the carcass of a great sea beast washed ashore. 
Cathedral-64 is part of an ongoing body of work using the ShiftDriver Spatial Audio System, an electronic instrument designed to control very large numbers of sound sources using 1-bit audio. Pieces in this body of work are created in an iterative process, each expanding in scope and exploring new spatial and acoustic compositional possibilities using the system. This process builds towards the creation of Temple-65536, the world’s largest spatial audio instrument as a permanent installation open to audiences and composers from around the world.
Leviathan explores the experience of this process from the viewpoint of Cathedral-64’s skeleton. It has discovered what it means to be a finite thing, borne out of infinite potential: it is but a small part of a much larger process of becoming, which as a finite thing it will never see completed. It has likewise discovered what it means to exist in time: gestures at permanence, attempts to live as an object, simply become performance on a different time scale. Yet being alive, it wishes not to die: Leviathan throws itself from the river onto the shores of Manhattan in a final, desperate attempt at life.

produced in collaboration with the MTA Vacant Unit Activation Program. 
The installation is accessible 7 days a week. Audio behavior is active 23 hours each day, with a short break between the hours of 4AM and 5AM.

In Taos, New Mexico there is a hum, a low but constant resonance of the landscape. Vibrating just on the edges of the listener’s perception, it is heard most often in the solitary hours of the late night and the early morning. A 1995 study by the Acoustical Society of America found that the frequency of the hum varied by individual listener, from 32hZ to 80hZ, suggesting an internal, psychosomatic origin for the sensation, but also that listeners consistently identified a phenomenon of acoustic beating when a reference tone was played for comparison, an effect only produceable by two sounds interacting in physical space. 
What then is the hum? What explanation can reconcile these factors: the internal subjective reality, the external objective reality, and the locality to the remote high desert?&#38;nbsp;
Perhaps the answer lies in attunement: the hum is omnipresent, it permeates all things, both the external world and our own bodies. The universe is a musical scale, a system of vibrations, and in the hum we perceive a lower order harmonic of this great structure. Those who are attuned can perceive the hum, and attunement comes from a lack of distraction. In the solitude of the desert, in a state of sublime peace and boredom, the universal order reveals itself. The meaning of this experience is obscure, but the phenomenon is clear. In the words of Franz Kafka:“You do not need to leave your room. Remain sitting at your table and listen. Do not even listen, simply wait, be quiet, still and solitary. The world will freely offer itself to you to be unmasked, it has no choice, it will roll in ecstasy at your feet.”

But suppose we cannot remain still and solitary? Suppose we are cast into a state of constant motion? Suppose rather than sitting inert, we wish to take joyful part in the sufferings of the world? How are we to maintain our connection to the universal harmonic order? Suppose we love New York City, and in New York City, the hum is drowned?
With Chambers Hum we have reintroduced this phenomenon into our urban environment of maximum distraction. Arriving subway cars produce a sustained vibration at 224hZ, which Chambers Hum uses as a root note for its tonality. By creating a slowly evolving tonal structure tuned to harmonize with the environmental sounds inherent to the subway system, Chambers Hum restores a connection to the universal order, conveniently located on the Chambers Street A/C Subway Platform.

Cathedral-64 is an immersive audio installation and instrument exploring the use of a very large number of spatialized sound sources. 64 individually controlled speakers are driven with sample-accurate 1-bit (square wave) outputs from a custom designed electronic audio system. The piece explores the musical and psychoacoustic possibilities of this instrument, with an emphasis on continued compositional experimentation throughout the duration of the exhibition.

The central electronic elements of the piece are displayed on a pedestal in the center of the space, with cabling running up to the ceiling and out to each speaker, creating the impression of a vortex or pillar of wire. 64 speakers are mounted in a grid pattern on the space’s walls and ceiling, surrounding the listener in fully 3-dimensional sound.

The piece works both on an auditory and a visual level, by creating a deeply physical and meditative sound environment, while simultaneously displaying the beauty of the instrument and the hardware used to create the sound.

The insects rush toward the point of frenzy, blind legions, caught in a momentum of their own making. Larvae twitch in waxen cells, bathed in a honey-colored light, while chitinous wings cut patterns in the pheromone laden air. Drawn ever forward, they fall into the roiling vortex, to die amid bolts of lighting and the smell of ozone.

Blind Legions uses the behavior of circuitry to convey an apocalyptic narrative: the story a catastrophic event brought about by civilization-wide momentum and exponentially increasing rates of change. Incorporating a series of sonic sculptural works designed over a two year period, Blind Legions realizes their full modular potential, synchronizing behavior via analog control signals in service of a unified narrative. 

Swarms of electromechanical insects feed off their collective momentum, hurtling towards a doom of their own making. Simultaneously, a series of video works are modulated in time with the swarm behavior, pushed towards incomprehensibility during the exponential rise and lingering as solitary impressions within the apocalyptic fall.

Blind Legions is a meditation on our modern conception of apocalypse. Within a cultural and material system predicated upon infinite progress, it becomes necessary that we envision a cataclysmic event which might bring instantaneous resolution to this otherwise unsustainable momentum. Blind Legions serves simultaneously to envision the reality of this event, in all it’s inevitability and horror, and to imagine the ways in which this conception may be artificial, a convenient substitute for the true reality of time; as a process unending and beyond human comprehension, moving in a direction all its own.

“When I was 14 years old I was a semi-professional Magic: The Gathering player. It was the most dedicated and focused I’ve ever been on anything. I believed in the game with the kind of monomaniacal fervor that only youth makes possible. It was the final round of SCG Open Dallas, with thousands in prize money and a first place trophy on the line. I was playing the final game of the match, and I had my opponent on the ropes. I attacked with all my creatures, presenting lethal damage. But then, the judges stopped the game. In my haste to seal my victory, I had not sacrificed Glacial Chasm, a card which states players cannot attack. I received a technical rules violation for attacking with it in play. The penalty was game loss and disqualification from the tournament. An event which should have been the crowning achievement of my career was instead a devastating blow. I lost heart and my focus suffered. Mixed with the inevitable process of growing up, I began to view my passion as a dead end. I turned my back on Magic, putting this truest of all desires away with other childish things, until now.”
Tomb of My Youthful Heart’s Desire is an installation piece built around a series of custom electronic reliquary objects, each of which functions as a generative heartbeat audio synthesizer, with the card Glacial Chasm entombed in solder amid the circuitry. Heartbeat audio is synchronized with a projection of original 2009 press footage from the final tournament match, speeding up to a frantic pace and eventually breaking when the final game loss is delivered, creating a requiem for the loss of a passion that only youthful innocence could sustain.
